My new serger, aka WTF

I caved and opened my new serger.  At least I waited until after my first paper was done so do I get half credit?  I'll take half credit when there are so few days left in class.

Folks, I was not ready for this.  What even is all of this?  I've never even used a serger before, I just wanted a faster and neater way to finish raw edges.  What is this thing?

There's four threads coming in.  There's two needles.  I really didn't expect that.  It shipped pre-threaded so I thought I would be able to just sit down and get a feel for it.  First thing that happens is it unthreds.  Well, okay, I'll just rethead that needle, no big deal.  Hm, not working now.  I'll check the quick start guide to make sure everything is where it's supposed to be.

10 steps to thread just one of those four threads?  And everything is so tiny that they include a set of tweezers.  I read that the order is important and since thread 3 has unthreaded and it tried to stitch without that thread, I need to rethread 1 and 2.  Ugggggh.  Fine, unthread everything and start rethreading the serger.  I spent an hour trying to get this thing to work.  Nope.  I narrowed it down to just the one thread going over the looper.  I could not figure out how to get it over the looper, not for love nor money.  I'm just dyslexic enough to make it almost impossible for me to follow a couple of photos trying to show a 3D action in 2D.  I stormed out of the sewing room to find some chardonnay.

Fortunately my husband found me and he has completely normal spatial awareness AND learned how to use a serger in high school.  He left me to my chardonnay and went to deal with my machine.  Sure enough, it was just the one looper that wasn't set right.  He got it running a treat in about 15 minutes and sent me back to try to learn my new machine.

Once it's running, it's really pretty straightforward.  Put fabric under foot.  Get your fingers the hell out of the way of the knife and both needles and the presser foot that is spring loaded.  Push on the foot pedal.  Get pretty finishes on your raw edges.

Yes, I finished my black lining fabric with white thread.  No way I was going to change colors after all of that.  Now that it's working I'm really quite delighted.  This wool blend is a loose weave and frays like crazy. With all of the edges overlocked I can handle the fabric without it falling apart.  It looks so fancy and professional!

My sewing room is looking a bit cramped by very serious business with the new addition.

Edges are finished and the skirt is now coming together.  Should have it finished this weekend, assuming my final paper comes together quickly.  If there's one thing my MBA program has taught me it's how to throw a bunch of fancy words into a document in a hurry.

Date night look difficulties

We're still in a pandemic so date nights aren't what they used to look like.  Living in the middle of nowhere, we don't have delivery as an option so if I want dinner, I make it or I drive out and pick it up.  Driving out to get something is a pain so we save it for special occasions.  Like anniversary dinners.  Cue me deciding that we were going to have a fancy dinner from our local winery and make it a date night.  After being stuck at home for almost a year, I'm pretty desperate for reasons to dress up.  I went all out for my trip to the winery to pick up our dinner in boxes with some bottles of wine. I got this dress at the end of December and hadn't even put it on.  I finally had an excuse.  I also did full What Katie Did foundation garments with the corslette and stockings to keep the lines smooth.  Wiggle dresses are not forgiving, there's a reason I usually wear poofy skirts.  Vintage necklace, usual hair, and plenty of red...

Big projects, small spaces

I've been plugging away at my sewing projects while catching up on everything that I dropped while completing my MBA capstone.  Crazy thing but carpets still get dirty even when you're writing papers, who knew?  And my job still has stuff for me to do.  Still don't have my final grades but at least all of the work is done. I actually get to leave the house this weekend so I'm having a big push to finish an outfit for the occasion.  Because we now live in a world where leaving the house is an occasion.  I will be wildly overdressed as usual and I'm looking forward to it.  My wool pencil skirt came out super cute.  Even the husband likes the way this pattern looks. Still need to hem it but otherwise it's done.  Had to take in the waist and hips by about an inch which is lovely news so far as I'm concerned.  The shaped waistband is flattering on me.  I'll hem it just below the knee which is exciting since I never have skirts that are ...

Category is: Freezing Rain Fantasy

The irony is that I decided to start a new blog dedicated to me dressing up in poofy dresses and the first thing that happens is a big damn winter storm.  Most of the country has it worse than us to be honest.  I'm close enough to the coast that the polar vortex didn't really happen.  The downside to this is that we got a wintry mix.  That's a polite way of saying it's a hot mess. We already had about 20" of snow on the ground.  This storm brought snow, sleet, freezing rain, and now just plain old rain.  All of the usual drainage is frozen solid so we now have running water where running water doesn't belong.  Like the driveway and the garage and my three season porch.  Temps are dropping overnight so everything should be freezing into perfect glaze ice by tomorrow. This is not weather for poofy dresses.  I can usually tough it out with some tights, canvas underskirt, sweaters, things of that nature.  Since I have to help get this ...
